Strolling through the most spectacular coastal walking country in Britain our route takes us along deserted sweeping bays, through rolling dunes, over high rocky cliffs, through tiny hamlets, fishing villages and small towns. As a bonus we detour offshore to visit the Farne Island. Holy Island and Coquet Island and go inland to the lonely cave where monks hid St. Cuthbert's body on their flight from Lindisfarne. We'll explore hidden and mysterious Warkworth Hermitage and Chibburn Preceptory.
Travelling through a landscape with evidence of 7000 years of human activity we'll visit the magnificentᅠ medieval castles at Warkworth, Dunstanburgh, Bamburgh and Holy Island; tour the mightyᅠ Elizabethan fortifications at Berwick and explore the little known Napoleonic gun battery at Alnmouth. We'll investigate the World War II coastal defences between Beal and Berwick and wonder at the ramains of the stone age dwelling, possibly the oldest house in Britain.
We'll visit the magnificent gardens at Howick Hall and a host of wildlife conservation sites, including two National Nature Reserve that testify to the great variety of wildlife and plant habitats on this coast.
