ROSEMARY VEREY AND BARNSLEY HOUSE GARDEN
The garden of Barnsley House, Gloucestershire, is one of the best-known and finest
examples of
an English country garden. Its potager, herb garden, knot and laburnum walk are
among the most photographed features of any garden of its kind. Yet Barnsley House
garden remains an essentially personal expression of the ideas and interests of its
creators, Rosemary Verey and her late husband David.
Rosemary Verey and Barnsley House Garden is a portrait of an extraordinary garden
and an extraordinary woman. Rosemary Verey has been called the queen of English
gardening. Now in her eighties she still travels the world lecturing and designing
gardens. Although her clients have included Elton John, the late King Hussein and
Prince Charles (to name but a few), the beauty of Barnsley is that it is neither
huge nor pretentious, and many of the ideas she has pioneered are readily translated to ordinary gardens – no matter how small.
Rosemary Verey and Barnsley House Garden is a celebration and exploration of the
Verey style in the form of a journey through Barnsley House garden; a journey
through the different features of the garden; a journey through nearly half a
century of painstaking dedication; and a journey through the seasons of a single
year. 60 minutes. Two Four Productions Ltd. $39-95 plus p & p.
SIR WILLIAM WALTON'S GARDEN - LA MORTELLA
La Mortella, on the Italian island of Ischia, was the home and garden of the late
British composer Sir William Walton and his wife Susana. Designed by the eminent
landscape architect Russell Page, the garden provided a haven where Walton composed
many of his finest works. Since the composer’s death in 1983 Susana Walton has
continued to build on the extraordinary collection of rare and exotic plants. This
video evokes colourful memories of a place where hummingbirds float among the
orchids and the spirit of the great composer lives on.

DIARMUID GAVIN'S IRISH GARDEN OR THE GARDENS OF IRELAND

Diarmuid Gavin, in this personal journey through some of Ireland’s most beautiful
gardens. From the formal splendour of Powerscourt, to a tiny rock garden in County
Clare, the wide variety of gardens featured in the well-known and the unknown, the
and the informal, the old and the new, the large and the small, the serious and the
fun. As Diarmuid observes in the programme: “They come in all shapes and sizes, but
every one of them reflects the enthusiasm and passion of the Irish people’s love
affair with the land.”
Diarmuid Gavin is best known for his unconventional garden designs on British
television with programmes like Homefront in the Garden, Homefront Inside Out, and
Planet Patio. In this, his first programme for RTE (Irish Television), Diarmuid returns to his native Ireland in a more reflective mood.
